Q. So, what’s the Broadband Connection Voucher Scheme all about? The Connection Voucher Scheme is part of a UK Government initiative to help SMEs connect to better internet speeds. We all know the benefits of superfast connections, making a business more efficient, cheaper to run and encouraging business growth. But sometimes, upfront costs can create cash flow issues for small businesses. To help out, budget has been allocated to 22 city councils. The Government wants SMEs to benefit from 30Mb+ speeds, so will be offering them from £100 and up to £3,000 towards connection and any construction charges.
Q. Is it a business loan? No, it’s a grant rather than a loan, so they don’t have to pay it back. Customers just pay the VAT, any amount over £3,000 and the monthly subscription cost.
Q. That’s great for businesses looking to improve their internet speeds. What internet connection does this initiative apply to? Any service offering 30Mb download speeds or more.
Q. So how and when will the scheme be rolled out? 22 SuperConnected Cities have been selected in the UK to benefit from this scheme.
The eligible cities are: Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Brighton & Hove, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Coventry, Derby, Derry/Londonderry, Edinburgh, Leeds/Bradford, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Newport, Oxford, Perth, Portsmouth, Salford and York. The scheme is due to run until March 2015.
Q. Can anyone apply for funding? Most SME’s within one of the twenty two super connected cities can apply. The Broadband Connection Voucher Scheme is administered by City Councils so may operate differently depending on each City Council’s policy. If businesses are looking to apply they should go directly to their council. They can see if they are eligible to apply for funding and use the handy postcode checker at www.connectionvouchers.co.uk.
Q. So who is eligible to apply for funding? Businesses applying must be a small or medium sized enterprise (SME) as defined by the European Commission. This means they employ between 1 and 249 staff and their annual turnover doesn’t exceed approximately £40 million. They need to be in a valid postcode area for the scheme and it needs to be the registered office or trading address of the business. If they work from a residential property as their main business base they can still apply. Registered charities, social enterprises and sole traders that meet this SME criteria are also very welcome to apply too.
Q. Are there any exceptions of who can apply? Yes, as with all schemes, there are exemptions to the types of businesses that can apply, but please check with your individual council as these exceptions may differ from council to council.
If a customer is a tenant of a business park or a commercial property landlord, they must have the approval of their landlord to proceed with the work and they must not already have a fast broadband connection to their property (30Mb+).
There are also other rules like customers are exempt if they have already received public sector funding to improve the broadband connectivity of their property. But all information can be found on the Department for Business Innovation and Skills website.
